HISTORY
The
Grande Cache Search and Rescue was initiated in 1995 based upon
a request by, and with the cooperation of, the Grande Cache detachment
of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The RCMP, recognizing
the need for Search and Rescue services in the area, assembled an
interested group of local volunteers. From this, a core group was
formed to undertake the mission.
The
Grande Cache group researched SAR standards both federally and provincially
before conducting a membership drive. It then undertook an assessment
of the local area and began a training process designed to meet
the requirements prescribed by SAR Alberta.
Through
its established relationships with local emergency service organizations,
the GCSAR has at its disposal trained, select individuals to enable
the support of SAR operations. These areas include SAR Management,
Swift Water Rescue, Surface Ice Rescue, High Angle Rescue and Crime
Scene Management.
Through
the efforts and resources of the GCSAR, the following have been
achieved:
· Training provided to the membership to meet the minimum
of SAR Alberta standards;
· Training not only in search skills, but also land navigation,
logistics, evidence retrieval, and search resource allocation. GCSAR
also maintains an historical database of lost person behaviours.
· Relationships established with local businesses to support
GCSAR in the involvement of search and rescue and training operations;
· Acquisition of various search and rescue equipment to provide
the services;
· Education provided to various community groups.
The
product of these efforts has enabled the organization to provide
the community with essential services and education. Examples of
these include providing:
· Support for several "extreme sports" events in
the mountains,
· First aid services at various community events, and
· Participation in various Town of Grande Cache events, while
continuing to meet the needs for SAR services.
